If you and your care team determine that your best treatment option is surgery for your heart valve problem, choose surgeons known for excellent care and outcomes. Our surgeons perform:
- Mitral valve repair or replacement
- Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR)
- Minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
- Complex surgeries, like simultaneous repair of two or three heart valves (double and triple valve surgery)
Heart Valve Repair
If your heart valve can be repaired, our surgeons will reshape the damaged portions, giving the valve a more normal shape and allowing it to function properly. Repairing a damaged valve lets your heart work better and avoids the need for long-term blood thinning medications.
Heart Valve Replacement
If you have a heart valve that is too damaged for repair, we may recommend heart valve replacement. During this operation, a surgeon surgically opens your chest (performs a “sternotomy”) and replaces the faulty valve in your heart using either a mechanical valve or tissue valve.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
Valve replacement surgery typically calls for significant preparation and recovery, including physical therapy and follow-up drug therapy. A TAVR, or TAVI, is a unique type of aortic valve replacement that does not require a surgeon to open your chest. With TAVR, a damaged aortic valve is corrected without removing it.
