An aortic dissection is a condition in which the inner and middle layers of the separate, allowing blood to seep in between. Dissections can occur where there is a weakness or tear in the lining of the aorta. Accumulating blood exerts pressure on the aorta, putting it at risk for rupture.
In some cases, surgery is needed to avoid rupture. A ruptured dissection is a medical emergency that requires immediate surgery. Our cardiothoracic surgeons are experienced in emergency thoracic aortic dissection surgery and work closely with Englewood’s Emergency Department and the community’s first responders to provide the most rapid response.
