To treat lung cancers located in or near the main airways, you doctor — working with our radiation oncologists — can place a bronchoscope into the airway and guide it to the cancerous area. Once it is place, a thin catheter is place into the bronchoscope. The catheter is used to apply high doses of radiation near the tumor. This direct application reduces damage to the surrounding, healthy tissue and allows higher doses of radiation to reach the cancer than would be possible with other methods.
