  • Colon & Rectal Surgery

I believe that a strong patient-surgeon interaction is essential for optimal outcomes, particularly in colon and rectal surgery. That’s why I spend time listening to my patients, understanding their concerns, and educating them about their condition and the most advanced treatment options. Then they can make informed decisions about their health that are right for them.

About

About Michael Marco

Dr. Marco is a colon and rectal surgeon. His clinical interests include colon and rectal cancers; non-operative management of rectal cancer; Crohn’s disease; ulcerative colitis; diverticulitis; fecal incontinence; fistulas; and anorectal problems, such as hemorrhoids, fissures, and fistulae. He is also skilled in robotic surgery; advanced laparoscopic surgery; and nerve-sparing surgical techniques that can help to preserve anal, bladder, and sexual function and avoid colostomy. Dr. Marco received his MD from Cairo University Faculty of Medicine, in Cairo, Egypt. He did a general surgery residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, in Newark, and a colorectal surgery fellowship at NewYork–Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in Manhattan, where he also did a postdoctoral research fellowship studying the colorectal cancer microenvironment. Dr. Marco’s research focuses on rectal cancer response to neoadjuvant treatments without need for surgery and watch-and-wait strategy. He has authored and co-authored book chapters and numerous scientific publications in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Diseases of the Colon & Rectum. He is the recipient of many research awards and has presented his work nationally and internationally. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. In addition to English, Dr. Marco is fluent in Arabic.
